Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 6) - Actress Liza Soberano continues to grind for her upcoming role as Filipino superheroine Darna.

The 20-year-old actress on Wednesday shared snapshots of her rigorous fitness training to prepare for her new role.

In the photos shared on her Instagram, Soberano can be seen toning her body for her new superhero role by throwing punches inside a ring, using workout ropes, and doing planks.

It has been over a year since it was first confirmed Soberano will be playing Darna for a Star Cinema film to be directed by Erik Matti.

Soberano is known for her roles in ABS-CBN television shows "Dolce Amore" and "Forevermore," and romantic films "My Ex and Whys," "Everyday I Love You," and "Just the Way You Are," opposite her onscreen partner Enrique Gil.

Fellow ABS-CBN talent Angel Locsin first took on the character when she was in GMA in 2005. Locsin was Matti's first choice for the upcoming movie, which was announced in 2015, but a back injury prevented the actress from accepting the roles.

The superheroine clad in red and gold was last portrayed by GMA star Marian Rivera for the small screen in 2009.

In recent reiterations of Darna, a small town girl named Narda chances upon a tiny rock from outer space, which gives her superpowers upon swallowing and shouting "Darna."

Darna first appeared in the comics created by acclaimed Filipino comic artist Mars Ravelo. The strip was first published in Pilipino Komiks in 1950.
