CNN Philippines' “Leading Women to #PressforProgress,” is a day-long event featuring talks and panel discussions on various topics concerning the modern woman.

Manila (CNN Philippines Life) — This weekend, watch a classic local film, celebrate Women’s Month with two all-day events focused on women’s issues, fight for love and equality at a rally for LGBTQ rights, attend the launch of a local indie band’s vinyl record, enjoy a day of all things film photography, help cleanup the coast of Manila Bay, and attend a weekend-long book sale.

“Leading Women to #PressforProgress”

CNN Philippines joins the global call to action to accelerate gender equality, gender inclusivity, and empowerment through talks, panel discussions, one-on-one interviews, and conversations at the “Leading Women to #PressforProgress,” a day-long event happening on Saturday, March 17, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the BDO Corporate Center, Makati.

The event features talks by award-winning CNN journalist and anchor Kristie Lu Stout on sisterhood; She Talks Asia co-founders Iza Calzado and Lynn Pinugu on self-acceptance; entrepreneur Rissa Mananquil-Trillo on the true meaning of beauty; Dr. Gia Sison on courage, winning, and self love; and social media influencer Hannah Pangilinan on speaking up, as well as a panel discussion on female stories in the media with photographer Shaira Luna, author Mina Esguerra, online strategist Coco Quizon, fashion designer and women’s rights advocate Mich Dulce, and filmmaker Samantha Lee.

Himala” at Cinema Centenario

This Friday, March 16 at 10 p.m., the 70/80 Project is holding a screening of “Himala” at Cinema Centenario as part of their March at the Movies series.

Directed by legendary auteur Ishmael Bernal, written by Ricky Lee, and featuring Nora Aunor in her most iconic role, “Himala” is considered by many as a masterpiece of Philippine cinema.

Grrrl Gang Manila First Year Anniversary

Continue the Women’s Month celebrations by joining Grrrl Gang Manila as they celebrate their first anniversary this Saturday, March 17 at Dulo MNL. Grrrl Gang Manila is a group that aims to create a safe space for women in the Philippines to discuss the issues that affect them.

From 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., attendees can choose to join Miss-En-Scène: The Female Experience Frame by Frame, a film screening celebrating the vibrance of womanhood, or attend the 7th Grrrl Meet where the topic of female sexuality will be discussed.

From 8 p.m. to 2 a.m., there will be a Storytelling Open Mic, as well as a Grrrl Band Night featuring artists Ourselves the Elves, Joee & I, The Shocking Details, The Male Gaze, Flying Ipis, and La Loba Negra.

Fight For Love, Fight For Equality: #EqualityNOW

This Saturday, March 17, at 5 p.m., LGBTQs and allies of the community can head to the EDSA People Power Monument to rally for the passing of the SOGIE Equality Bill (Anti-Discrimination Bill).

The bill seeks to prohibit and penalize acts of discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression (SOGIE). After nearly 20 years, the SOGIE Equality Bill was approved in the House of Representatives in 2017. However, up to this day, the bill has not gained grounds in the Senate. The rally is just one of several simultaneous events and mobilizations happening across the country as LGBTQ groups push for the passing of the bill.

The Ransom Collective's "Traces" Vinyl Launch

Local indie-folk band The Ransom Collective is releasing a vinyl version of their much-loved album, “Traces.” This Saturday, March 17, at Satchmi UP Town Center, the band is holding an intimate performance alongside guests folk singer-songwriter Yan Abelardo, and lo-fi bedroom pop artist RuRu. Copies of the vinyl version will be available for purchase at the event. Gates open at 5 p.m.

Expired Film Day

This Sunday, March 18, film photography-enthusiasts can enjoy a day filled with films, cameras, zines, and more at the Expired Film Day event. Hosted by Film Folk, the buy-and-sell event will be held at Shutterspace Studios from 2 p.m. onwards. Entrance is ₱150.

Pick It Up! Manila Bay Coastal Cleanup

Join the UP Dragonboat Team as they conduct a coastal cleanup on Freedom Island, a nature reserve along Manila Bay that is frequently affected by trash. The cleanup event is happening this Sunday, March 18, at 5 a.m.

Volunteers are advised to wear light clothing, closed shoes, and caps, and bring tongs, sacks, pails, garden gloves, and rubber boots. E-Jeepneys will be picking up volunteers at the SMX parking lot at 4:30 a.m.
