Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — Thousands of Filipino Catholics practice Visita Iglesia (“church visit” in Spanish) every Holy Week.

During Visita Iglesia, devotees reflect on Jesus’ suffering by visiting seven or 14 churches, on Maundy Thursday or Good Friday, and reciting the Stations of the Cross.

Early Catholics visited seven basilicas in Rome: Basilica of Saint John Lateran, Saint Peter’s Basilica, Saint Mary Major, Saint Paul Outside the Walls, Shrine of the Holy Cross of Jerusalem, and Saint Sebastian Outside the Walls.

Today, many Filipinos consider Holy Week as an opportunity to travel out of town to participate in religious activities. For those who can’t leave their homes at all, Visita Iglesia can be done online, a project started in 2010 by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines.

As for Manileños who can’t leave the city this coming Holy Week, there are plenty of churches to visit within Metro Manila.

Here’s a guide to help you plan Visita Iglesia this Lent.
