Former Iloilo governor Niel Tupas, Sr.

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — Former Iloilo governor Niel Tupas Sr. passed away at the age of 82 due to multiple organ failure caused by prostate cancer.

His son, Rep. Niel Tupas Jr. said his father passed away at the Philippine Heart Center in Quezon City at 1:35 a.m. Tuesday (November 24). His remains will stay for three days at Loyola Memorial Chapel in Commonwealth then will be brought home to Iloilo for the funeral.

Aside from being a former governor, Niel Sr. also served as mayor of Barotac Viejo, Iloilo, an assemblyman, and a representative of the 5th District Province of Iloilo.

In September, the former governor and three others faced a graft case for allegedly paying about P4 million of unconsumed electricity of the Iloilo Provincial Government to Greencore Geothermal Inc. from December 2009 to April 2010.

He posted a bail, in which the Sandiganbayan Fifth Division lifted his arrest warrant.
