According to the Philippine National Police (PNP), the gun ban for next year's elections will start on January 11.

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — The Philippine National Police (PNP) said the gun ban for the 2016 elections would begin on January 11 and last until June 8.

However, PNP chief Dir. Gen. Ricardo Marquez said he would prefer to implement the gun ban as soon as possible.

"Experience would tell us that the campaign against firearms and should be a whole year operation and the election period would provide us additional focus on these challenges," Marquez said.

Meanwhile, the PNP is looking at seven election hotspots for next year's elections.

This is lower than 15 provinces listed in 2013.
