Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — A special Porta Sancta or Holy Door of the Manila Cathedral was opened Wednesday (December 9) signaling the start of the observance of the Jubilee Year of Mercy in the country.

Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle led the opening of the door, but instead of asking the help of other priests, the cardinal did it with the poor and persons with disability.

This is also different from the act that happened in 2000 during the Great Jubilee. Instead of breaking open a seal as was done by Jaime Cardinal Sin, when he opened the Holy Door 15 years ago, Cardinal Tagle and his companions pushed the door open.

Pope Francis also pushed open the huge bronze Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican to formally launch his 12-month "revolution of tenderness."
