Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — After 42 long years, another Filipina was crowned Miss Universe.

Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach won the title Monday (December 21, PHT), besting 79 other pageant contestants.

"We congratulate her for this success as the third Miss Universe of the Philippines, following in the footsteps of Ms. Gloria Diaz and Ms. Margie Moran-Floirendo."

Malacañang congratulated Wurtzbach for winning the beauty tilt, claiming that her victory is a "true representative of what the Filipina can achieve."

"In bagging this victory, Ms. Wurtzbach not only serves as a tremendous source of pride for our people, but also holds up the banner of our women and of our country—as a true representative of what the Filipina can achieve," the official Palace statement read.

"Indeed, this triumph is the result not only of her beauty but also of her passion for positive change, as one who is confidently beautiful with the heart."

Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutiérrez was initially declared as winner but a retraction was made by host Steve Harvey after admitting it was an honest mistake on his part.

The Palace lauded Wurtzbach's equanimity, saying: "In the first few moments of the original announcement, she showed tremendous poise and control, and even more tremendous graciousness when the real verdict was finally announced."

Netizens, including celebrities and beauty queens, took to social media to comment on the surprising turn of events.

'Regal, wonderful Christmas gift'

Presidential aspirant Sen. Grace Poe sent her warmest congratulations to Wurtzbach as well, saying: "Her story of resilience and perseverance is the story of all Filipinos. She inspires with her grace and compassion for others."

"The Filipino heart indeed shone through. What a wonderful Christmas gift to us," she added.

Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago, another presidential hopeful, described Wurtzbach as regal. Santiago added: "But from what I've heard, we need to talk. See you!"

For the Top 5's question and answer portion, she was asked whether the U.S. should have military presence in the Philippines. She answered, in gist, "I see no problem with that at all."

Other 2016 bets took to their social media accounts their congratulatory messages to the winner of this year's pageant.

Manuel "Mar" Roxas II also sent out his congratulatory message, noting that the last time the Philippines brought home the Miss Universe title was when Margie Moran won in 1973.

Yehey and Congrats to #MissUniverse2015 PiaW ! Mabuhay ang Pilipinas! Last pinay Miss U was Margie Moran 1973!
