General Santos City (CNN Philippines) —  Presidential candidate Rodrigo Duterte laments the decision of President Benigno S. Aquino III to veto a bill to increase the monthly benefits of Social Security System (SSS) pensioners by P2,000.

Aquino said that his decision was not made out of on a whim, as saying that raising the pension would bankrupt the SSS.

Duterte told reporters in General Santos City on Saturday (January 16) that solutions could be found for the problem regarding a supposed lack of funding for the proposed pension hike.

According to Duterte, what is important is that a pension increase will help SSS pensioners, like add to the funds they set aside for buy medicines for their various illnesses.

"Along the way — kung ma-lugi sila [if the government loses money] — by that time, baka ma-improve ang economy [the economy might improve]."

"You can get other funding or maybe other additional resources… something like increase the contributions or go into some other venture that would be profitable for the funds that are contributed by the members."
