Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, March 30) — Two days after turning 72, President Rodrigo Duterte brought up on Thursday his health condition, saying he needs additional oxygen when sleeping.

"Yung picture sa, nu'ng birthday ko, kasi na-picture-an 'yung kwarto ko, may converter to oxygen," Duterte said. He was referring to an image shared by his son-in-law on social media which showed his grandchildren with him in his bedroom greeting him on his birthday. Next to the President's bed was a device which he referred to as the oxygen converter.

"Pagtulog, nakasaksak ako. Ang brain ko daw, suffers lack of oxygenation. Matagal ko nang ginamit yan," he said in remarks before the oathtaking of newly-appointed government officials in Malacanang.

Duterte turned 72 on March 28.

On Wednesday, the President said that his breathing problem from smoking is one of the reasons why he will implement a smoking ban in the Philippines soon.

"You can only smoke if you are in the open sea, at least five kilometers from the coastal shores. Doon kayo maghithit (You can smoke there),"  the President said in remarks to residents and officials in the municipality of Socorro in Oriental Mindoro.

The Executive Order on the no-smoking policy is awaiting the President's signature.

Duterte said he is transparent about his health condition, disclosing his illnesses even during the campaign season.

"I never lied. Tinanong ako doon sa debates, anong sakit mo, sabi ko, Barrett, (dahil sa) inom pati ano, Buerger, because of smoking," he said.

Barrett's esophagus is a complication due to gastroesophageal reflux disease which causes heartburn or acid indigestion.

However, Duterte said on December 2016 that he is just fooling the media about his health, a week after he announced having daily migraines and spinal pain.
