Senator Alan Peter Cayetano

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 17) — In less than five minutes, a panel of the Commission on Appointments (CA) on Wednesday approved Senator Alan Peter Cayetano's nomination as Foreign Affairs Secretary.

No member of the CA's foreign affairs committee objected to Cayetano's appointment.

The committee's decision was referred to the plenary in the afternoon, which approved the motion to confirm Cayetano's nomination — also without objections.

Senator Panfilo Lacson, who chairs the committee, said it was perhaps the "shortest confirmation hearing of a Cabinet Secretary."

Cayetano, who is also a member of the CA, thanked his colleagues for letting him breeze through his confirmation hearing.

"I make a commitment to you today and I will do my best na hindi ko kayo mapahiya (I won't fail you)," Cayetano told members of the CA.

Should he be effectively confirmed by the powerful CA, Cayetano will be deemed resigned as a senator.

He will replace Perfecto Yasay who was rejected by the CA last March for lying under oath and failing to declare his U.S. citizenship in 1986. Undersecretary Enrique Manalo took over the post in an acting capacity.

Yasay was the first appointee to have received a rejection. The other was Environment chief Gina Lopez who was replaced by Roy Cimatu, former AFP chief of staff.
