Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 16) — Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III is keen on taking the Ombudsman post to help President Rodrigo Duterte fight corruption.

Nakikita ko na very long 'yung fight niya so I decided na tulungan ko siya para mayroon siya kasama [I can see that he has a very long fight ahead so I decided to help the President and be his ally],” Bello told CNN Philippines’ Newsroom.

He said that he sees it as a bigger challenge than his current duties at the Labor Department. “Settled naman lahat 'yung labor issues. More or less, ok na. Natulungan ko na lahat ng mga kasama ko sa department [The labor issues have been settled. More or less, it’s now okay. I have helped all my colleagues at the department],” he said.

Apart from being Labor Secretary, Bello is also in charge of negotiating with communist rebels to forge lasting peace. He also served as former Justice Secretary and Solicitor General during the term of former President Fidel Ramos.

Application for the Ombudsman post closed on Tuesday, after being extended from the original May 2 deadline.

Among the candidates was Associate Justice Teresita Leonaro-de Castro, who declined her nomination as Ombudsman, saying she wants to retire at the Supreme Court.
