Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 9) — A whale shark was found dead in the shores of Tagum City, Davao del Norte on Monday.

Environmentalist Darrell Blatchley posted the photos on his Facebook page, showing the 14-foot whale shark surrounded by locals off-shore.

Blatchley claimed some plastic residues from Philippine products were found lodged in its gills.

"The large plastic cup and jello plastic blocking the gills. Had to be pried out. The rest (were) inside the stomach blocking the fine filters of the intestines," Blatchey said.

He added the whale shark was underweight and emaciated.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) will keep a sample of the fish for study.

"DNA samples (will be) kept for national BFAR the rest of the remains buried as the skeleton is cartilage and almost impossible (to be used) for preservation," Blatchley said.
