Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 10) — Two soldiers were killed while three were injured in an Army clash with suspected communist rebels Friday morning in the province of Isabela.

Captain Jefferson Somera of the Army's 5th Infantry Division confirmed in a text message to CNN Philippines that army troopers encountered a group of New People's Army (NPA) rebels in Sitio Diarao Baba, Dicamay 2 village in Jones town, triggering a firefight that left two dead and three injured on the government side.

There were no immediate reports of casualties among the guerrillas.

On the same day, some 100 suspected NPA rebels swooped down on the municipal hall and police station of Lapinig, Northern Samar. Two policemen were wounded and the attackers carted away guns, mobile phones and laptops, authorities said.

A senior official said the predawn raid could be a show of force by the fighters after President Rodrigo Duterte canceled peace negotiations with communist rebels.

This is a developing story.
