Telcos provide free call, charging centers in 'Ompong'-affected areas

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, September 16) — Residents in areas affected by Typhoon Ompong will benefit from free call and mobile phone charging stations provided by telecommunications companies.

The stations will be located in the following areas:

Globe Telecom

Tuguegarao City

  • Shell Station, National Highway, Caggay (7 am - 9 pm)
  • Cagayan Capitol Grounds (24 hours)
  • Brgy. Halls of Ugac Sur, Ugac Norte, Cataggaman Nuevo, Pardo, Viejo, Linao Norte, Linao Sur (9am - 5pm)

Ilocos Norte Province

  • Capitol Grounds (8:30 am - 9 pm)

Smart Communications

Cagayan Province

  • PLDT Office, Tuguegarao
  • King H, Brgy. San Gabriel, Tuguegarao
  • Tuguegarao People's Gym
  • Smart Cell Site, Penablanca, Cagayan

Smart Wi-Fi has also opened the use of it's Wi-Fi stations beyond the normal 30-minute limit to assist people in the typhoon-affected areas. These include the Wi-Fi stations in the following locations in northern and central Luzon:

In a statement, service availability for PLDT fixed line and Smart mobile services in North and Central Luzon are at about 96 percent.

"Network restoration work, particularly for Smart's mobile service, is focused in the provinces of Cagayan, Benguet, Apayao, Mountain Province and Kalinga, which were hit hardest by the typhoon and where power outages and storm damage to network facilities have had the most adverse impact on network operations," it added.

In a separate statement, Globe said more call and charging stations would be opened within the week.

The company has also distributed and initial 12 boxes of relief goods to be distributed to Cagayan Valley, with additional meal packs to be given to families in other provinces in the next few days.
