Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, February 8) — A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck Surigao del Norte and was felt in some parts of Visayas and Mindanao on Friday evening, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The quake, tectonic in origin, had a depth of 19 kilometers along General Luna, Surigao del Norte. It struck the area at 7:55 p.m.

Intensity 5 was felt at Surigao City, while Intensity 4 hit Gingoog City in Misamis Oriental.

Intensity 3 was recorded in Cagayan de Oro City, Borongan City in Eastern Samar, and Cebu City.

Intensity 2 jolted Catbalogan City in Samar.

Intensity 1 was recorded in Kidapawan City, Cotabato, Lapu-Lapu City and Argao City in Cebu, and in Alabel, Saragani.

Phivolcs warned of aftershocks but said damage was not expected.
