Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, February 19) — Two policemen who were caught drinking alcohol in a public place are under "administrative investigation", the Philippine National Police (PNP) said.

PNP Spokesperson Bernard Banac said officers are prohibited from drinking in public places whether in uniform or not, to preserve the image of their agency.

"Iwasan natin ang anything na makacontribute sa negative image whether nakauniporme kayo o hindi, for as long as public place 'yan, iwasan na lang po natin," Banac told the press Tuesday.

[Translation: Let us avoid anything that would contribute to our negative image, whether you are in uniform or not, for as long as it is a public place, let's avoid it.]

Possible sanctions against the officers are suspension or demotion, Banac added.

SPO1 Franklin Nariz and PO3 Tristan Callao were seen and photographed drinking at Korabs Canteen along Justice Lourdes Paredes San Diego Avenue, Quezon City Monday evening.

The PNP said the documentation will be used as evidence for the administrative charges filed against the officers.

"We assure the public that we will continue to pursue our campaign on internal cleansing and we will not hesitate to dismiss personnel from the service to rid our ranks of misfits and scalawags," its statement said.
