15 killed, 11 injured in Zamboanga City fire

Authorities recover some of the remains of those trapped in a fire that hit the Zamboanga City Public Market on Saturday, October 31, 2015.

Zamboanga City (CNN Philippines) — Fifteen people were killed while 11 others were injured in a fire that struck the Zamboanga City Public Market at dawn on Saturday (October 31).

According to police sources, the fatalities – some of whom were minors – were trapped in the market.

The fire reportedly started at a structure known as Row G and spread until it reached a wooden structure along Magay Street where ukay-ukay (secondhand) clothes were sold.

Chief Insp. Joel Tuttuh, spokesperson of the Zamboanga City Police Office, said eight of the dead were women, six were minors, and one was a man. He identified them as:

  • Nur ais Hasiddin

  • Abei Salahuddin
  • Nurul in Salahuddin
  • Algabid Salahuddin
  • Marilyn Salahuddin
  • Binas Salahuddin

The injured who were taken to various hospitals were identified as:

  • Nasriya Hamis
  • Nasmiya Hamis
  • Albini Jaani
  • Alfredo Mana
  • Nurmina Jamiri
  • Yasser Jamiri
  • Almudzra Hamis
  • Midzfar Hamis
  • Farhana Hamis
  • Bennaser Hamis

As of this writing, fire authorities were just starting to investigate the incident.
