Philippine Olympian and De La Salle Univeristy (DLSU) table tennis player Ian Lariba

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, September 3) — Philippine Olympian and De La Salle University (DLSU) table tennis player Ian Lariba has passed away after a grueling battle with leukemia on Sunday. She was 23.

The DLSU Office of Sports Development confirmed the news on its official Twitter account.


Lariba, who made history as the first Filipino table tennis athlete to qualify for the Olympics in 2016, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in May 2017.

She went undefeated throughout her five years in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines where she was hailed Athlete of the Year for two seasons and won three Most Valuable Player awards.
